Year 5 Immersion Day - The Romans

Exploring the Romans through mosaic art

Year 5 spent the afternoon delving into the world of the Romans through Roman mosaic art. The afternoon began with a short presentation, where the children learned how and why mosaics were created by the Romans. Covering the floors of wealthy Roman homes, each mosaic was intricately crafted with many thousands of small cut stone.

To create their own mosaic, each child was provided with a Roman soldier head template and tasked with using small pieces of coloured card or tissue paper to fill the template. The pieces of card were approximately 1cmin the majority of cases and it was an exercise in patience for all involved!

The immersion day allowed the children to be introduced Roman history and to understand a huge part of the Roman legacy. The Roman soldier mosaics will be put up on the classroom display, as visual a reminder to children of their Roman journey.

Computing: Systems and Searching

Year 5 explored and identified the strengths and limitations of search engines. They were able to explain that a search engine follows rules to rank results. Following on from this, they gave examples of criteria used by search engines to rank results.

In addition, children now recognise why the order of results is important, and to whom. They are able to describe some of the ways that search results can be influenced.

Children can now confidently explain and give examples as to how search engines makes money such as through sponsored advertisements.

Year 5 Science Investigation: Exploring Friction!

Our brilliant Year 5 pupils embarked on an exciting science investigation to discover which materials create the most and least friction. Using their working scientifically skills to set up a fair enquiry, they set up a ramp in order to test carpet, bubble wrap and foil paper to see how far a toy car would travel along each surface.

With their predictions in hand, the pupils accurately measured the distance travelled and then analysed the results to determine if they were correct.

What a fantastic way to apply scientific thinking and engage with practical experiments!

Year 5 Literacy - Mufaro's Beautiful Daughters

Year 5 have been reading African folktales, focusing specifically on the story of Mufaro’s Beautiful Daughters. To deepen their understanding of the story, the class were divided into groups and tasked with acting out key scenes from the story. This allowed the students to fully immerse themselves in the characters and themes, whilst gaining a deeper understanding of the narrative of the story. They all did an amazing job and are better prepared to retell the story of Mufaro’s Beautiful Daughters in their own words.

Year 5 Explores Africa through Adinkra Art!

This week, our talented Year 5 class immersed themselves in the vibrant culture of Africa as they explored the rich tradition of Adinkra symbols!  Guided by their curiosity, pupils delved into the meanings behind various symbols, creating their unique designs that reflect their own personalities. They were also provided with fabrics and clothing containing Adinkra symbols.

Choosing to use pencils, marker pens, watercolours or acrylic, pupils brought their ideas to life, sketching intricate patterns that tell their individual stories. We are so proud of the creativity and effort they displayed in crafting these stunning art pieces! Each design is not just a visual masterpiece but a symbol of their personal narratives. Well done, Year 5!
