Classroom Learning

Science- Exploring Food Groups

In Year 3, the children had an exciting lesson all about food groups and their importance for the body. The lesson commenced with a collaborative sorting activity, during which the children organised various foods into categories such as carbohydrates, proteins, fats, dairy, and fruits and vegetables. They relished the opportunity to identify the classifications of items like bread, chicken, apples, and cheese, eagerly sharing their insights with classmates.

A particularly engaging aspect was the tasting session, where children sampled crunchy carrots, soft bread, and creamy hummus. Many expressed enthusiasm for trying new flavours and shared their experiences with peers. By the lesson's conclusion, the children gained a clearer understanding of how a balanced diet contributes to health and energy.

Celebrating Diversity

As part of our commitment to diversity, we recently celebrated International Day at Salisbury Primary School! The children donned their traditional clothes and had a fantastic time sharing the stories behind their outfits. They were then given the choice to select a country to explore further, diving into various cultural facts. The excitement grew as they created short presentations to share their findings with the class. Some opted for colourful paper displays, while others embraced technology and crafted impressive PowerPoints. It was a brilliant day full of learning and celebration of our unique backgrounds!

Exploring the Human Skeleton

During the Science lesson, children delved into the intricacies of the human skeleton, identifying essential bones such as the skull, femur, pelvis, spine, and ribcage, many of which possess complex names. Through their investigations, children examined the functions of these bones, understanding their critical roles in movement, support, and protection. Engagement was heightened as they explored a model skeleton, which provided a hands-on learning experience that the children thoroughly enjoyed, enhancing their grasp of human anatomy.

Exploring the Rainforests

In order to bring our learning to life, the children in Year 3 utilised virtual reality (VR) technology to embark on immersive journeys through various rainforests around the world. This innovative experience allowed children to explore the distinct layers of the rainforests, the rivers that meander through them, the diverse animals residing within, and the unique tribes that inhabit these regions. Such engagement fostered stimulating discussions among the children, significantly enhancing their understanding of the intricate ecosystems of rainforests.
